“Hi, this is Tom Kenaston, I’m a Pianist, singer, songwriter living in West Palm Beach and also in New York City. This clip is going to be about how to learn to read music. Music is literally another language, so it’s quite extensive, the amount of studying that goes into it, just as it would be another language. But, the first thing that you need to know is all of these things on here, on the paper are symbols, and they represent notes on the piano, or in the voice. For instance, this is all piano music, let’s forget about that right now and let’s look at the line above, that’s the vocal line. All of these dots and lines and squiggle’s represent the notes, the stems help you learn about note values, or rhythmic values. This tells you the pitch, where it is on this series of lines and spaces, tells you which note you’re going to sing, so that is this one, and then you’ll see that the next one goes up, so you can hear it goes up in pitch. You can see as they go up, the tone gets higher; and as they go down, the tone gets lower. Some of the notes that you see are empty little circle that’s hollow inside, some of them are filled in, some of them have flags towering over, those all represent rhythmic values. For instance, in this passage, this little guy gets two beats as you’re playing and listening through music, everything is timed to a beat, so this would be one, two, so that’s how much value that gets rhythmically. These are called eighth notes, just FYI, and there are lots, and lots, and lots of other types of note values, pitches, all of it is represented on the page by all of the little dots, and lines and symbols that you see there. That’s just a general overview of how music works, this is Tom Kenaston and this has been how to learn to read music.”
