postheadericon Children: Problem Areas

“Hi, I’m back at California Music Academy for expertvillage.com and we just talked about having your kids write, let’s talk about having your kids conduct. Two things you can do, both involve colored pencils. Teach them the conducting pattern, so you’ve got one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. Have them do that to music. So you’re trusty CD turns on, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. It’s just a great way to get them to solidify the beat and to understand that the beats go over and over again, and that this happens in their own boxes. Second thing you can do with having them conduct, is have them conduct you, while you play. They will point to the note on the page, you’ll play it. The only catch is, they can’t point to any random note, they have to point to them in order, and they have to point to them in rhythm. One, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one two, rest. This, this actually is for some kids, the first time, even though they may have been taking lessons for a couple of months at this point, the first time that they have been able to connect what they hear, with what they see, with how it happens in time. So, this is a really, really good tool, even more useful than playing to the music and conducting to music, is having them conduct, point to it, as you play.”
