The roots of piano rock can be traced to 1950s rock-and-roll pioneers Jerry Lee Lewis, known as “the killer”, Fats Domino, Little Richard, and a few others. Many of their frantic performance styles, such as kicking the piano bench out of the way to play standing, raking their hands up and down the keyboard for dramatic effect, and even sitting on the keyboard are now commonplace in modern piano rock.
Rock piano is related, but not the same as, the blues. And the blues is based on a 12-bar pattern that repeats. Probably the main difference is in the rhythm — jazz and blues tends to by syncopated, while rock is often steady, with a heavier beat.
