Learning how to read piano sheet music takes time. The more sheet music you read the more familiar it will become. Obviously you need to read each individual note, but I am going to give you 3 Tips on Looking for Patterns. This saves you a great deal of time when you are learning a new piece.

Tip 1 – Looking for patterns is similar to reading English. When you look at a word, you do not read the individual letters – you see the whole word. We can do the same with reading Sheet Music.

Music notes can do one of 3 things –

Stay the same.
Go up.
Go down.

Look at the first 2 notes in your piece. Which direction are the notes going?
Look at the next 2 notes in your piece. Which direction are they going?

The higher a note is in the music, the higher it will be on the piano.
The lower a note is in the music, the lower it will be on the piano.
Reading music is like moving up and down a musical ladder!

Tip 2 – Now look at a group of 3 or 4 notes. What shape can you see?
Is it rising? Is it falling? Is it rising and falling like an arc?
Form the shape of this pattern on the piano with your fingers.

Tip 3 – Look for repeated patterns. How many times does that pattern appear in the piece?
Now see if you can find the same pattern that has been moved up or down a note – as though the pattern has been “copied and pasted”.
