Reviewed Software
Below we provide brief summaries of our reviews of various software packages. Currently, we only review IBM-PC compatible programs. Most such programs written for Windows have nearly identical versions for the Macintosh, so our reviews should also be valuable for Macintosh users. Where a Macintosh version is available, we indicate that fact in the review.
We strongly encourage you to read the in-depth reviews of these software packages, as a summary or a numerical rating can do limited justice to the software. This is particularly true if your needs are special or unusual. To go to the full review, just click on the ” Full Review ” link. To aid in finding specific types of software, we have classified the packages into six categories below, based on our perceptions of their major features. However, many of the packages have multiple functions, so if you don’t find a program that interests you in a particular category, check the summaries of the other programs. We also suggest that you read the Using Reviews Properly section of our Choosing and Using Music Software article, in order to make the most of our, and others’, reviews.

Private Piano Lessons: Finding a Teacher
It can be very rewarding to learn how to play the piano – it’s a very fine instrument that can produce many different types of sounds and evoke different moods with its playing, from lighthearted to serious. There are several different ways to play the piano depending on your budget and personal preference. You can buy piano DVD’s or piano videos and learn that way, you can log onto web sites and take good piano lessons online, or you can try to teach yourself. The other route, which most people traditionally take, is that of finding a piano instructor. Finding a instructor to teach you private lessons sometimes can be difficult, especially if you happen to have just entered a new community and don’t know anyone. Even so, you still have a few options.
Your piano tuner (if you have one) is a good person to ask first about whether they know anyone offering piano lessons in the area, or you could try asking any acquaintances or friends you may have that know about these things. Someone usually will be in the community willing to accept a small fee for private piano lessons. If you find someone, get to know him or her beforehand and find out about their experience, teaching style and frequency of meetings. Also, you should try to get to know your potential new teacher on a personal level; you may find a friend in the process.

Piano Dealer Lessons
Many sellers of pianos offer lessons in their showrooms. Such lessons are often heavily promoted in radio and print advertisements and may be included with the purchase of a piano or expensive digital keyboard. Often, piano dealer lessons take the form of standardized audio courses heard through earphones while you play at some type of digital keyboard, with monitoring by a teacher.
While such lessons can be useful, depending on the quality of the course and the involvement of the teacher, it is likely that you will not get the one-on-one kind of commitment by a teacher in this setting that you would get with private lessons. We’ve heard from some students that these audio course lessons are valuable; other students report less positive experiences. We’ve also heard horror stories, including from some teachers, about outright pressure by the dealer on the teacher to maneuver students into buying digital keyboards or pianos.

How To Learn to Play the Organ
One of the most interesting and fascinating instruments to play, is the organ. There are many variations of this instrument, from the standard electronic, as seen in the picture, to the more refined Church Organ, Orchestral Organ or the Theatre Pipe Organ as they are called. They can have as few as one keyboard (manuals) to as many as seven. Learning the organ can seem difficult but also extremely rewarding, as the musical variety they are capable of is astounding.
Step 1 Â
The organ is a challenging instrument to play correctly, and there are many ways to play it correctly, both in popular and classical repertoire. However, if you have a good keyboard technique to begin with, you can move to the multiple keyboards and pedals with more ease. The organ, or at least the pipe organ, is not really the place to learn to read music or play a keyboard. You should get this knowledge on a piano, or home electronic organ first.
