postheadericon : The Piano Teacher (9781852427504): Elfriede Jelinek…

You might not expect to find a novel that among other things links chamber music with the perils of perfectionism, sexual masochism and sadism – and the inner and outer life of a talented and tormented woman. “The Piano Teacher” does this and much more.

Erika Kohut is a former music prodigy in her late thirties, a teacher at the Vienna Conservatory, strict and rigid with her students – as well as with herself. Her father left shortly after her birth and she lives with her elderly mother, who is, we are told, old enough to be her grandmother, and her “inquisitor and executioner all at once.” Her mother has given her all to assuring her daughter’s talent: “Erika has never had to do housework, because dustrags and cleansers ruin a pianist’s hands.” The daughter’s “vocation is her avocation: the celestial power known as music.” Erika has a room of her own in their apartment – mostly a place to hide some of her possessions. Mother and daughter sleep in one bed. Her mother expects obedience, loyalty – and Erika’s paycheck, which is to help buy them a new apartment.

postheadericon Read Music Notes, How to Read Music Notes for Adults, for Adult Beginners

You might be a first timer taking up a new interest in music… or maybe this is your second go at learning to play the piano. Like most music students, you dream that you’ll soon be playing your own favorite songs on the piano. Perhaps you look forward to the fun of playing the piano for your family and friends. And maybe you’d even love to create your very own beautiful piano music.

But then you will soon discover a problem nobody warned you about: that music notes are difficult to learn.

Most music courses just expect you to remember the notes on the piano by repetition alone… with the result that you often end up just having to guess what the notes are!

Children’s Methods

Alfred Method For Children

The Alfred method uses a lot of colored pictures and graphics to help with the teaching process. The newest updates in the Alfred Method for children include use of software, compact discs, and /or cassettes. This method utilizes the concept of position playing, which has a disadvantage that students sometimes do not learn to read the notes, but rather rely totally on position playing. Thus, if they approach a piece of music not written in a Five Finger Position, they are at a loss. An advantage of this method is that students learn to read intervals and to see the intervalic relationship between notes. They are also exposed to chords and progressions. While the lyrics to the songs are not really necessary, the pictures and graphics are wonderful. Students who have been raised on this method exclusively sometimes seem to have limited competence in note reading and undeveloped technique. Another disadvantage is that the major classical composers should be presented to the students at a much earlier stage than is typical in this method. The Alfred method is great for beginning teachers who need a pre-programmed lesson format to follow. It would be our hope that once the beginning teacher becomes more comfortable and knowledgeable with different methods that they would expand beyond sole use of this method.

postheadericon Proper technique?

Well, of course it is possible … but would you be happy with the results? I mean, I can’t even understand entertaining such a thought.

It is like saying, is it possible to sit down at a clean table if you only gave your tablecloth a lick and a promise, rather than a good scrub…

Why ever would you try? Part of the fun is in getting there ….. and in addition, the results are ever so much better

postheadericon Advanced Piano Lessons concepts: Ear Training

Ear Training on the piano With the goal in mind of giving you simple, “real world” hints that you can use, this week’s ear training hint is one that you can understand in 5 minutes, and then develop for the rest of your life!

Note: This is an archived article on Ear Training. To see the current video version, click here.

To “train” your ear means to develop the ability to take what you hear (either a musical idea in your head, or something that you’ve listened to) and express it musically.

Here’s one of the greatest ways to develop this ability on the piano and keyboard:

  • Start with a very simple melody that you know well (Start VERY SIMPLE – “Mary had a little lamb, etc.”)
  • Start from any white note on the piano and pick out the melody (don’t worry about which fingers to use at this point.)
  • Once you can pick out the melody well (Here’s the clincher!) do it again, this time starting from a different white note on the piano.

Sounds easy? OK – do this until you can pick out the melody well from any white note on the piano, then start from a black note. Once you can play this simple melody starting from ANY NOTE on the piano, pick a more involved melody.

Usually leaves our warehouse in 6 to 8 business days.

At first glance, a piano may seem like an intimidating instrument that would be very difficult to learn how to play, but despite what your seventh-grade piano teacher may say, playing piano isn’t brain surgery. It just takes time, practice, and patience.
